Humble
Creatures,
the new album from EINSTEIN’S SISTER, continues
the fine tradition of arresting melodies and insightful lyrics
set forth by the Illinois-based group’s critically-acclaimed
Learning Curves,
which gathered praise from Amplifier,Goldmine, and Perfoming
Songwriter.
Reuniting
with co-producer Tom Tatman (Greg Brown, Tripmaster
Monkey, House Of Large Sizes), the band recorded the 11 tracks
of Humble Creatures
at Catamount Recording in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and at
Real Trax Studios with Rob Cimmarusti in Davenport,
Iowa.
EINSTEIN’S
SISTER - Andrew Brock (bass, backing vocals), Bill
Douglas (lead & backing vocals, percussion) Marty Reyhons
(drums, backing vocals), Kerry Tucker (lead & backing vocals,
guitar, keyboards, upright bass), Steven Volk (guitars, backing
vocals) was joined in the studio by jazz trumpeter extraordinaire
Manny Lopez ("Mermaid Parade"), along with vocalist
Zoe Lindskog Robinson ("Big Brother Eye).
Beginning in the late ‘90’s, EINSTEIN'S SISTER songwriters
Bill Douglas and Kerry Tucker chose to write,
record and produce a self-titled album independently on compact
disc. The duo’s songs attracted the interest of Minneapolis-based
OarFin Records, who quickly signed the band and released a second
disc, Oceanus in the winter of 1997. The
album, featuring"House of Liars"(which charted #26
at CMJ), ultimately failed to deliver on the promise of the
songs, due to creative differences between the producer and
the band. Determined to regain complete control over their recordings,
the group chose to return to their indie roots and release their
next album on their own.
In the Spring of ‘99, EINSTEIN’S SISTER released
Learning Curves
. Featuring "Jealous Time," "My Secret Life,""Destiny
Will Ride" and "Mr. Genius,". Learning
Curves brought the band national attention
through Internet sales on Amazon.com and Not
Lame Records. Music licensing opened another door for the group
as songs were used for MTV ("Undressed," "Making The Video,"
"Road Rules," "Live Through This"), NBC ("Passions" - overseas
market) and the Oxygen Network.
Upon the success of Learning
Curves, EINSTEIN’S SISTER was
invited to submit a track ("Changing Heart") for Full
Circle - A Tribute to
Gene Clark,
as well as perform at the legendary Troubadour for noted L.A.
music critic David Bash’s International Pop Overthrow festival.
After
its release in the fall of 2000, Humble
Creatures attracted critical praise from
several reviewers, and even won the band a coveted D.I.Y.
SPOTLIGHT feature in the December 2000 issue
of Performing Songwriter. In addition, public radio station
KUNI selected the album as their 'CD of the Month' for
December 2000, granting airplay to most, if not all, of the
album's 11 tracks over the course of the month. Theirs
would be the only regional release to make KUNI's list of favorite
albums for the year, which also included XTC, PJ HARVEY and
RADIOHEAD. Not bad for a D.I.Y. band from the Heartland.
